According to a book I just snagged from the libarry, Ronnie Van Skynryd once opened for Black Sabbath and tried to kill his own guitarist while Sabbath guitarist ZAKK WYLDE looked on in horror. Yes you read that correctly. Also I found out today that Mojo Nixon died on a day not far from the day the drummer he portrayed in "Great Balls of Fire" also died. Sounds like a good reason to go back to the earliest episodes of this podcast and relive my "Great Balls of Fire" review with copious amounts of Nick Toshces history of Jerry Lee, eh? What ELSE you got going on, anyway? CHRIST! Anyone who listens to this episode tacitly endorses my purchase of a $60 3-channel mixer pedal I used to record some music with over the weekend. Hiya Hiya Hiya! We're back with a new film commentary, just the same kinda thing that started this whole podcast, Me and my pal Dan Teisan reacting in real time to a rock n' roll film from the mid 1990s. I was originally clued into the existence of this movie on either reddit or facebook in an "Old newspaper ads for films" group(because my life is a non stop action sensation of sensational action and adventurous sexual encounterings with wild people I'm constantly encountering and adventuring all up and over). And I have to say I was shocked that I'd never heard of this film made with my dude from Eddie and the Cruisers and one of the Boondock Saints and Diane Ladd so what's the deal here? Oh wait, who's on the soundtrack...STRYPER? Oh THAT's why. It's a film about mid 90s L.A. rock and somehow there's STRYPER songs in it? Well then it's a Christian film isn't it? Yep, it is. Also featuring more retrospective on the 1932 White Zombie film and narratives provided by Rob Zombie, Sean Yseult and Jay Yuenger from old interviews and blogs and books. The fine people at Radish Mattress and I will cover, among other topics: Ivan's upbringing in Brooklyn, his drum heros, and how he fit into the band over the years Rebuilding the engine on the White Zombie van for their early tours The elements of his 1992 drum kit that he still owns and uses in his recent projects How his mother got to America to escape Nazi occupation and death camps in Ukraine and Poland The Boundless Joy album and tour last year His best times in the gym with Rob Zombie His impression of every White Zombie guitarist over the years His view of Sean and Rob's separation and how it led to the splintering of the band's family vibe How he ate on the first European tour after blowing all his per diem money on a bitchin pair of leather pants The scary encounters on the road…

I don't know how to warn you I might get a little wibbly-bibbly in the wobbles during this one. Verklempt, if you will. Similar to the way I was on the CROW episodes processing the loss of Brandon Lee all over again. Ritchie was clearly a marvel and a unique talent in ways I didn't understand until now. To be a guitar hero and a hit songwriter and a teen idol at the same time is a hurculean accomplishment for a 17-year-old kid from Pacoima, California in 1958. And I struggled a bit when jumping on the mic right after my research. This goes back to me being a little kid when I saw the film and begged my dad for a cassette tape of the soundtrack, which I treasured. Rock n' Roll, baby. Rock n' roll. It's gonna be a bit of this n' that: The first impressions of Ritchie by his most prominent biographer, Beverly Mendheim, while she struggled to suss out his ethnicity as an impressionable teenager The career struggles and ongoing activism of Lou Diamond Phillips, who is more consistently successful as an actor than…

Hello and get ready for so much Van Halen once again! And Better Off Dead! So much good stuff that could have only happened in the 1980s converging in one place. Along with more 70s Van Halen history too, of course. We'll cover stuff like: Savage Steve Holland's real life experiences that went into his script, and later work in children's cartoons Michael Anthony's first meetup with Sammy Hagar Eddie's challenges in early life as a shy kid would couldn't speak english in America His challenges shaking off the controlling influence of David Lee Roth and Ted Templeman making "1984" the way HE and Alex and Donn Landee wanted to John Cusack's initial hatred of "Better Off Dead" and his eventual backpedal The Van Halen family's journey from The Netherlands to Pasadena by boat and by train My shock at finding out Alex's drums on certain songs were actually an electric kit Al, Mike, and Sammy's soundcheck routines and gear specs on the 1993 tour The AC/DC songs Eddie says inspired "Panama" and "Drop Dead Legs" The…

Next episode will feature a deep dive on "Better Off Dead" and conclude the Van Halen saga. But until then, please enjoy: A very well-rounded view of VH history by Eddie Van Halen in 1990 Sammy Hagar's arguably sketchy claims about Van Halen's numbers before and after he joined Eddie producing and promoting a band called "Private Life" who obviously did not go on to amazing things (but hey, even if you or I never heard their songs, they still accomplished more than most of us, eh?) Eve Clarke interviewing me about my "Perfect 10" VH tunes of the David Lee Roth era Sammy's tale of meeting Eddie for the first time and joining Van Halen The final installments of my real-time (and space-time) reactions to the Art Linson/Cameron Crowe teen epic that had a lot going for it even if it didn't come out fully cooked - "The Wild Life," starring Nice Guy Eddie, Marty McFly's mom, Vincent Vega's heroin dealer, Clark Griswold's cousin Eddie, and the "Wanna take a bath?" gal from Pink Floyd's Wall film adaptation. Well, this was ill-advised, I now think to myself... and now you've got a big ol' buffet to keep going back to for as many trips as you'd like, and I don't know how many of you were expecting Jell-O as well as sushi after your fried green beans. But, whether you listen to it all in sequence or segments, I hope it's valuable to you! Here's a few things you will hear about during the ride: Contraptions used to make Pink Floyd songs like "One of These Days" happen and how they were calibrated The definition of scenery gorn and other tropes found in the film The Bear's emotional relationship with the Wall of Sound, which becomes everyone's relationship with it as well, because The Dead could not perform the same way on everyone else's rinky dink P.A. systems after experiencing the clarity they were used to Pink Floyd's year-long scheme to move from Capitol to CBS in America Hendrix blowing off the Dead on the night he promised to jam, and their low key "revenge" Antonioni's opinions on filmmaking in America vs…

The next episode(s) featuring Floyd, The Dead and Zabriskie Point are mostly done and in final editing stages. Phil Lesh is the best music writer. Richard Wright may or may not have been incredibly smart for not legally being a member of Pink Floyd from 1980 onward. I agree with Roger Ebert for once. Bear knows a thing or two about sound reenforcement after going mostly deaf in one ear. EMI helps create the first internet conspiracy theories in rock. The Dead ditch the jug band thing after seeing "Hard Day's Night." Star of the film dies in the middle of bench press. Douglas Adams makes an appearance in the name of "The fundamental interconnectedness of all things" and $5,000 of Floyd's money. Stuff blows up in slow motion. Weir and Garcia have a pointed back-and-forth with their front-of-house feedback. Roger Waters does his best Italian accent and makes sure all the 1970 soundtrack tapes are reused in future song demos. All this and more, in today's educational whirlwind of sound and flerp. Damn right, I'm doing my "White Zombie" episode just before Halloween! I never had too much of a plan for when I was going to produce this one, because I knew it would be another massive undertaking as well as another "way more history of the band than the movie" situation. If this is your first episode of the show, WELCOME! I want you to know this is probably the coolest band that ever existed for me. I've been bonkers over them since my best friend Eli let me borrow his cassette of "La Sexorcisto" back in 1992. I genuinely did not understand why everyone in the universe did not love this band as much as I did from 92-98. Here's what we'll cover today: Sean's early years in ballet and art classes, as well as an amazing summary of her WZ career after the fact (more on her musical influence on the band next episode) The beginning and ending of Sean's relationship with Rob Rob's early entertainment influences and work on "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" Jay's tales of the NYC recording of La Sexorcisto, how he managed to…

Sometimes reading autobiographies leads to great (or just mild) disappointment and no great use for a normal episode of the show. In today's case, I refuse to be the only person who is disappointed, nay INCONVENIENCED, by the works of Nikki Sixx, Flea, and Dave Ellefson. None of these sources that I sought out will be usable in conjunction with a film, but that doesn't mean I can't squeeze at least a bit of fun out of 'em. Or at least, review them for you so you can decide for yourself how much more you need from those pages. This is one I started more than a year ago, and just didn't want to get anything wrong by rushing to publication too soon. But now I'm ok with the amount of research packed into this episode and can move on to creating #2. Here are a few things you have to look forward to: Richard's scat-centric pranks on family and neighbors as a child Early abuse at the hands of strange white men from out of town The many influences that shaped his stagecraft and persona His father's murder at the hands of just some dude that was drunk and in a bad mood His journey from local bandleader to touring dynamo A few of his early attempts at hit making that did not go over with the record buying public The key differences between him and R&B or Blues artists of his era A Rik Mayall quote from the time he met Richard Life in The Upsetters on the road A history lesson on "conking" Recording "Tutti Frutti" with all the butt sex language taken out Getting arrested for public sex stuff https://archive.org/details/little-richard-movie…

The second part of maybe three? Maybe four? Besides me talking through the mid-phase of the DLR era with my friend Eve, and my real time reactions to Cameron Crowe and Art Linson's "The Wild Life", there's alla this action right hyeah: A "death of hard rock" review from 1978 The band hosts Wet T-shirt night at Mitty's Stories about the making of some legendary VH songs Another review of "The Wild Life" (not great!) VH Vying for Gene Simmons' stewardship on the same night as not-quite-Dokken David Lee Roth on his suspicions that Gene was secretly just after Eddie Eddie's Ibanez Destroyer and the Chris Holmes connection Van Halen plays with Journey, Sabbath, and The Rolling Stones The time Eddie chopped a piece off of his Gibson SG during a recording session Some nice thoughts from Steve Lukather New monthly bonus feed here! https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock Choose your preferred method of supporting the show for no money or maybe some money: PayPal tips: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/whatsamatta Shirt…

New monthly bonus feed here! https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock This marks the end of The Crow trilogy...of my shows, not the film trilogy. Much like the Robert Johnson episode, I was shocked to find out how little of full story of this incredibly talented performer's death I had actually known all this time. The Crow stands out from many other subjects of A History of Rock n' Roll in Film and Rock n' Roll. I simply don't talk in as much detail about most movies I cover on these episodes. But I think it stands to reason that many of them didn't have an influence on modern culture, moviemaking and popular music like this one did. Usually the subjects covered in the films I review (the rock stars with names in the title, or just the era of culture portrayed) had more influence in real life than the films themselves. This episode covers a lot more Nine Inch Nails through some great interviews with Trent Reznor from the 90s, plus one little magazine review of an early New Order show that I couldn't help but…

New monthly bonus feed here! https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock This episode is dense and detailed as all hell. I say that every few months about a new episode, it's true. But this really ranks up there with my Janis Joplin, Chris Cornell, AC/DC and Doors episodes in the amount of research (see the many references below) and interstitial music edits involved. So thank you in advance for your indulgence. This one covers: An expanded history of James O'Barr's journey from the USMC to optioning The Crow for a development deal Joy Division's early gigs, record deals, recording experiences, and Ian Curtis's death Trent Reznor's trials putting together the "Pretty Hate Machine" era Nine Inch Nails lineup, touring as an opening act, 1990s ascension as the eternal outsider, generally underreported backstage raucousness and the eventual shift into "Downward Spiral" The many steps between "The Crow" as a comic book released independently out of Detroit to nationwide distribution to screenplay revisions to script…

Here we go! The beginning of The Crow saga I've been working toward for a couple of years. I had big plans to cover more bands from the soundtrack, but after learning what I learned about O'Barr and Reznor's mutual love for Joy Division, I decided to take this route. Please enjoy hearing about: Trent Reznor's Cleveland cover band years, becoming a roadie for The Revolting Cocks and making Pretty Hate Machine for TVT Records James O'Barr's early life, tragic loss of his fiancee, joining up with the Marines, creating and publishing The Crow Joy Division's origin story in Manchester, starting with the early Sex Pistols gigs they all went to and how they snagged Ian Curtis, and developed their early sound New monthly bonus feed here! https://www.patreon.com/rockfilmrock PayPal tips: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/whatsamatta Shirt designs with defeatist messaging delivered via bright colors and childish graphics: https://www.bonfire.com/store/justtheworstshirtsever/ Subscribe to me on YouTube:…

Who wants to chat about animation, new wave, and early 80s heavy metal? This episode is wild by any of my usual standards. The topics veer all over the place and the music is wackier than normal. Hope you like it! This one covers the making of Heavy Metal, the amalgamation of many different animation studios all working overtime to complete their different segments, the difference between Taarna and the original Moebius story "Arzach" or Arzack or whatever, the anarchic and confrontational post-Kent-State-Massacre origins of DEVO, the resurgance of Sabbath in an era where pretty much EVERYone wanted them to die, a Lester Bangs review of Stevie Nicks' "Belladonna", the creation of Blue Oyster Cult's insignia, and Cheap Trick cutting ties with their problematic bassist in order to take on a much more problematic bassist. I'm likely committing the final Hank Williams episode to the new Patreon account, as well as some Van Halen content, Guns n' Roses backstory, then some Nine Inch Nails & Joy Division bonus…

It's an ACE episode! And a TV episode! Such a cheap cop out for a show with "film" in the title, I know. But you love it when I subvert your expectations, don't you? This one dips heavily into Ace's account of important moments in KISStory and then permutationalizes into a commentary track for an old Quantum Leap episode. I hope you can enjoy both, because I care about you and want you to be happy. Because of me. I want you to be happy because of things I do, because I'm a no-good person and all of life is just a series of transactions. https://therokuchannel.roku.com/details/1ebb8d7299bb5e1da9d8e2e4a98d9b2d/quantum-leap-s3-e17-glitter-rock-april-12-1974 Choose your preferred method of supporting the show for no money or maybe some money: Shirts: https://www.bonfire.com/store/justtheworstshirtsever/ Subscribe to me on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV4Up7xGgjioEC07bjwu4mQ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RockFilmRock Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justtheworstever/ PayPal:…

Hunter S. Thompson, Lester Bangs, Legs McNeil, Nick Tosches, Rex Weiner, and because I'm feeling sassy as hell, Michael O'Donoghue. Yep, this is a purely selfish and HUGELY self-indulgent episode where I read you things that recently made my heart swoon. Things I love for the pure energy of the language used, but that I can't graft onto any one band or film episode. Much brutality and obnoxiousness and vulgarity in this episode. But it's endearing and inspiring because it's delivered to us by a reckless and desperate generation with heart and intellect and guts, god damn it. Not for the easily offended, especially those who refuse to believe that historical/cultural context should affect how we process language that we personally wouldn't use today, even around our friends. Not asking anyone to love it or sign off on it, but I will not pretend I have the authority or responsibility to make the nasty words palatable for people who will be offended by them regardless. If you are explaining, you are losing, as…

No idea who this is for, other than people like us who HAD to watch the Brett Michaels movie as soon as we found out about it. I start the episode with some older interviews just so that the Bret fans will have something of value to listen to before the rest of the episode slides into 2 hours of loud befuddlement on the part of myself, Dan, Brian, and Jackie. Some of you already know their voices from the Shred Guitar and Metal Lords episodes I put out last year. The film in the only viewable online form we could find: https://youtu.be/Qbbrr4oim-k The actual film commentary portion of the episode begins around 24 minutes in. Welcome back! Thank you for patiently waiting for this 2nd part of the "I watched 3 Hank Williams movies in one weekend though ironically its taking me more than 3 months to release the series" trilogy. I cover lots of stuff you don't normally hear about in Hank Sr retrospectives and documentaries, so even if you've seen a few, you might still learn something here on this episode. I gotta take a break from Hank to release one or two episodes next that require a little less labor becoz they're already mostly completed. This next 30 days may be the most randomized release schedule I've ever attempted, thematically speaking. HOPE YOU LIKE VARIETY!!!! This is an episode I'm as proud of as I could ever be. I had the joy of covering the Misfits turbulent times in the 70s, 80s, and 90s with all the innocent fun + mean-spirited legal chicanery I could unearth. This will include yarns about WCW, Static Age, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the creation of Legacy of Brutality, The Box Set, and Jerry and Doyle stealing Danzig's Samhain skateboards FROM UNDERNEATH GLENN'S BACK PORCH WHEN HE WASN'T AROUND BECAUSE THE ANZALONE PARENTS WERE LIKE "WHATEVER!". I also have the massive pleasure of including pieces of my Jay Whitecotton interview. No, he's not a plantation owner and slave driver (as his seeimingly racist industrialist name would suggest). He's a comic and musician from San Antonio that has a new Halloween Special that you should check out if you love standup comedy filmed in a basement with cuts to A GENUINE lizard person reading the post-apocalyptic news to you in the near near future. Speaking with him was a gift, and I'll release more of our conversation…

So happy I get to revisit MISFITS once again! But I'm also amazed and a little bit unhappy it took me a full year to do it. I've covered two films - just my basic rundown & first impressions. And my ruling on whether you should look them up or not, instead of details about the makings of. Because there isn't much documentation I could easily find. Especially since Hammer was such a movie factory at the time, cranking out work non-stop. It's not like there are multiple books or documentaries about these two pictures, ala "Apocalypse Now" or "Citizen Kane" or "The Ewok Adventure". Spoiler alert: If you were hoping for a deep dive into all the times Jerry and Glenn were nice to each other, it's probably not this. Spoiler alert #2: I do indeed talk about the time Jerry and Doyle got a Yngwie Malmsteen singer to do a power metal album with them in 1989. Please enjoy and look forward to one more MISFITS installment coming your way before Halloween this year.…

Hank Williams Sr. is not only crucial to the development of Country and Western music, I'd go as far as to say he's an influence on the development of the culture of the the Western World - as in multiple continents. But more importantly for us, Rock n' Roll would certainly not be as rich in rhythm, poetry and plaintive cries from the wounded human soul to the deafening wind in the cold wilderness that is Life, when you're down and out. In my opinion he not only changed Country music forever, but he sang blues as well as any white man ever can be expected to. This episode covers most of my viewing of "Your Cheatin' Heart", an MGM musical from the early 60's that feels like an olde-tyme Disney film, and I take you through Hank's early life and influences. The greatest cluster of said influences being a spinal deformity, his domineering mother, a regular booze habit at the age of 11, and the tutelage of a black blues musician named Rufus Payne. All potent ingredients in a recipe for a man who would become a…

No not the sequel. That film, like "Godfather 3" is just something you heard of and may foolishly think you remember, but never actually happened. This is just the second part of my series on this wonderful film that is mighty beloved to me. Settle in and prep yourself for more readings from Bruce Springsteen interviews & the P.F. Kluge novel, my analysis of the movie and its origins and execution in my own loving detail, + my very accurate representations of Bruce's non-Jersey-sounding singing voice. Not to mention my cogent explanation of what I've termed "The Mount Rushmore of Jersey rock singers that try to sound like they're from The South". I'm not sorry. This one is truly, truly, truly outrageous like fer SHUR! 2nd warning in a row that you will hear a bonanza of F-Bombs from yours truly on this one. You'll get lots of the usual side trips into various major events of the life of the band in question along with reviews/history of Satisfaction, Valley Girl and Jem & The Holograms (the show, not the movie). You'll also hear as I get louder and more random in my live observations about Britta Phillips and Justine Bateman's performances as band members onscreen. Be thank-filled that I don't record every episode this late at night with friends and drinks around. Warning: Tons of F-Bombs from your host in this one. Julie Roberts & Justine Bateman portrayed members of band managed by Liam Neeson, along with Britta Phillips at the tail end of her tenure as the lead vocalist of TV's "Jem & The Holograms" (which I think merits its own episode, soon). Meanwhile, the Go-Go's get together in the late 70s L.A. punk scene, tour the UK, come home, get signed and through touring with The Police and getting on MTV, they become huge 80s megastars and inspirations to a kajillion young women and girls of that era. I draw from B&W punk zines, Belinda's memoirs, 1 of 2 documentaries and real time recordings of me and some pals watching "Satisfaction" a year and a half ago that I'd be saving for this episode. Because damn it, that f**king movie is impossible for me to find anywhere now, so I knew I wouldn't get a second chance to react to it or explain it. https://linktr.ee/justtheworstever National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline…

Hoo boy! This one has it all, folks. More tales from the early tours, the move from Sun records to RCA, the first appearances in Vegas and Hollywood, Priscilla Presley Bingo, Penn and Teller, multiple head traumas and multiple overdoses, not to mention a whole load of douchebag journalists straight up telling Elvis he sucks and that American teenagers that like him "need a good hard slap across the mouth."
